Welcome to Class 5The Mighty Oaks!

Our Class Teacher is Mr. Reeson.

Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Kirk and Mr Hall.

We are a class of 21 year 6 students.

Over the year we will be learning three topics. This term we are learning all about 'The Maya Civilization'. The children will have the opportunity to learn all about the Mayans and how they lived. We shall also be making some homemade tortillas. This year as part of the new curriculum design children will receive knowledge organisers for Topic and Science. Children are required to learn all of the knowledge organisers. Children will take mini quizzes to help them learn the facts.

Story starter!

Down in the town, streets became abandoned as people scuttled into their houses to escape the sudden downpour. Those left stranded took shelter under their umbrellas, or those without darted to find cover in shop doorways. Many ‘tut-tutted’ as they went, glancing up at the sky and frowning. It did seem to have rained a lot recently!

The weather in this particular town had always been strange. The town’s inhabitants would often debate the current weather over their breakfasts, jokingly asking “wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone could control the weather?” That was, of course, a ridiculous thing to say. No-one could control the weather, could they?!

Can you continue the story of the Weather Tree?

Sentence challenge!

Can you add the commas into the sentence below?

Suddenly the streets became flooded with a river of water but people still carried on with their everyday business.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help? Could you add an adverb?

It started to rain. Water came down from the tree. People went inside.

.

Question time!

What causes the weather to change in this town?

Can you explain how different types of weather are generated?

Who is the figure that lives in the tree?

Who do you think lives in the town?

How are they similar/different to use?

What came first: the town or the tree?

Perfect picture!

Can you draw a picture of your favourite type of weather? You could draw an activity you could do in that type of weather.

In the sweltering depths of the misty marsh, it lay there. Waiting.

The eye was as green as the grass in a garden on a summer day, but much more deadly. It was speckled with gold, like the brightest stars shimmering in the sky at night, but much more deadly.

As if in a peaceful slumber, the creature stretched itself out, scales covering its body from snout to tail.

It lay there, waiting…

Story starter!

Life was tough, being the Incredible Hulk.

He had had a tiring week (as per normal), but today was his day off. Walking the dog had always been one of Hulk’s favourite things to do on a Sunday. He could totally relax and put to the back of his mind all of the things that had made him feel stressed during the week.

For years, Hulk had struggled to control his fierce temper and extraordinary strength, but very often things would still go badly wrong. On one occasion, he had become so angry with the traffic lights on his way to work that he had completely crushed the steering wheel. On another, he had punched a hole in the side of his house when trying to swat a fly! Just the other day, Hulk had stumped his toe on the corner of his bed, so had thrown his bed out of the window where it landed on top of next door’s car…

Today he was going to try his very best to not find himself in any embarrassing situations…

Sentence challenge!

When you finish your writing can you make a tally chart showing how many times you have used the following word classes: noun, adjective, verb, adverb.

A noun is an object or thing. An adjective is a describing word. A verb is an action, and an adverb describes the verb. Can you identify the word classes in the following sentence?

Occasionally, the Hulk whistled as he drove his tiny Nissan Micra to work.

Sick sentences!

The Hulk walked through the park. He was big and green. His dog was small.

Question time!

Could the Hulk be incredible if he was skinny?

We are all incredible at something. What are you incredible at?

What else do you aspire to be incredible at in the future?

If you could have super powers, what would you choose?

What activities do you think Hulk would be good/bad at?

What food do you think the Hulk eats?

If you met Hulk, what questions could you ask him?

Perfect picture!

Can you draw a picture of the Hulk doing something else unexpected? For example, he might be a fantastic cook, or enjoy riding on a skateboard!

Story starter!

Wisteria Carrow had always been unusual. People tended to stay well away from her, suspicious of her unusual appearance: wavy, grey hair and a mysteriously pale complexion. Wisteria Carrow also enjoyed her own company, living far away from civilisation and the hustle and bustle of towns and cities. She lived not far away from the shoreline on the edge of Darkmist forest.

She had always painted, but she was not like any other painter in the world. The paintings done by Wisteria Carrow were different, because they came alive.

The sound of the water gently lapping against the shore accompanied the release of her latest creation. Wisteria Carrow poured the miniature ships into the ocean, watching as the breeze rippled their unfurled sails.

It was all part of her plan, and Wisteria Carrow was a witch…

Story Writing Genre Tick-list KS2

Sentence challenge!

Can you write a compound sentence, where two independent clauses are separated by a colon?

The first independent clause describes something and the second gives extra detail.

E.g. Wisteria Carrow was old: she was so old that she could remember the famous Queen with red hair.

Wisteria Carrow had magic in her fingertips: for years she had created the most incredible paintings.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

The sky was cloudy. The ships went across the water.

Question time!

If you could paint a picture that could come alive, what would you paint?

Is there anybody on board the ships?

Who is controlling them?

What is the witch’s plan?

How do you think Wisteria Carrow became a witch?

What other magic might she be capable of performing?

Where does she live? What might it be like inside her house? Does she live alone?

Perfect picture!

Can you draw a picture of something that will come alive? Think carefully about what you draw: you may regret it!

Story starter!

Month: June Year: 3015

Dear diary,

It has now been 2 years since we moved here. Leaving Earth was tough, but we are beginning to feel more at home with every single week that passes.

When we came to our new home, we were allowed to bring everything with us from our Earth homes. It still feels a bit strange though. Life without gravity really takes some getting used to!

Can you continue the diary?

What is gravity? Can you include descriptions of what it is like to live without it?

Where is it that you now live? How is it different from your previous life? How do you spend your time? Do you prefer living in your new home?

Question time!

If you lived here how would life be different?

It is thought that one day it may be possible to live in on another planet. What do you think about this?

Is it a good idea? Why do you think humans are looking for ways to live in space or on another planet?

How does gravity work? How do we overcome gravity?

If living in space, how would you manage to do everyday things like brushing your teeth?

Can you draw what a classroom in space would look like? You could include this in your diary entry as well

Wherever we go in our lives, someone has been there before us. It’s sometimes hard to imagine.
When you walk down the street, when you travel to school or work, when you go about your normal, everyday business you are always surrounded by the past. Memories. Moments. Hopes. Dreams. The lives of others are entwined with ours. We may not notice them, we may not see or feel them, but they are there.
Echoes of the past are all around us. If you close your eyes and think, if you close your eyes and let your imagination run wild, you can almost see them. Almost feel them.
As they pass you by, you start to think. You start to dream…
